While research is limited on the effects of therapeutic bodywork in individuals with autism, there have been promising results, and a great deal of positive anecdotal accounts. Since everyone on the spectrum has very unique challenges and preferences, a tailor-made session is a MUST.  Sometimes that involves a little trial and error, as well as the ability and willingness to be flexible throughout each session.  Together we will explore what works best and if the need arises we will alter our approach as we both learn more.

Massage therapy can be intimidating, especially for those with an aversion to touch, tactile sensitivities, body positioning, lighting, sound…the list goes on and on.  So before our first appointment we will chat in order to make the environment welcoming and therefore help to ease anxiety about the session.  We can adjust temperature, lighting, sound, scents, colors, and decide the best way to proceed together.

The first session can include just a meet and greet and getting to know the space.  Next, we might demonstrate massage on a caregiver, friend, or family member to take some of the unknowns out of the equation.  When we are all ready to start with physical touch, it can be limited to just feet/hands or wherever is comfortable.  Use of any comfort objects (fidgets, blankies, stuffed animals, service animals, etc.) are always welcomed.  Sessions DO NOT require clothing removal or the use of lotions/creams/oils.

Visits can include:

vagal stimulation

essential oils

craniosacral therapy

reflexology

reiki

breathing techniques

somatic therapy

therapeutic massage

Sessions can be as short or as long as necessary and customized for each unique individual.

Autism runs in Molly’s family, so she has firsthand knowledge of what life can be like on the spectrum.  She also has extensive training and experience in bodywork and physical medicine, with extra education in working with special populations.

Some things that can change with regular sessions are:
